There's a moment in Love Actually that everyone remembers — the wedding scene where, out of nowhere, a full band and choir rise up among the guests to perform "All You Need Is Love." It's been over twenty years since the film came out, and that scene still gets people every single time. We built The Love Actually Band around recreating that exact feeling for real couples, on their real wedding day. And for a long time, we did it exclusively in the UK.
That changed with our first American performance, at The Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota, Florida — a moment that's stayed with us as much as it stayed with the couple and their guests.
From Yorkshire to the USA
The Love Actually Band started life in Harrogate, Yorkshire, and for years our reveals were a UK phenomenon — weddings across England, Scotland, Wales and further into Europe. Bringing that same surprise to America meant more than just booking flights. Musicians who look right, sound right, and can learn a tightly choreographed reveal in a short space of time don't just appear from nowhere.
That's where years of living and working in the United States made all the difference. Having spent a significant stretch of time based there, our founder Marcus had built up a genuine network of American musicians — vocalists, brass players, a full choir's worth of contacts — built through years of gigs, sessions and connections rather than a cold-call agency list. When the opportunity came to bring the Love Actually reveal to a wedding in Sarasota, that network is what made it possible to assemble something extraordinary in a short window of time.
Assembling a 16-Piece Band From Scratch
For this performance, the lineup grew to a full 16-piece band and choir — one of the largest configurations we've ever put together. Musicians who'd never performed together before had to learn the arrangement, the entrances, the exact choreography of "blending in" with wedding guests before the reveal, and the timing that makes the moment land. It's a genuinely difficult thing to pull off: the whole magic of the performance depends on nobody in the room suspecting a thing until the first note.
Pulling together that many musicians, rehearsing them, and having them disappear into a wedding crowd convincingly enough to fool 150 guests is not a small undertaking — and doing it for the first time, in a new country, with musicians meeting each other for the first time, raised the stakes considerably.
The Night at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota
The setting itself could not have been more fitting. The Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota is one of Florida's most elegant wedding venues, and performing there for the first time on American soil felt like exactly the right way to launch this chapter of the band. As the ceremony reached its natural pause, guests who'd been sitting beside "fellow wedding guests" all evening suddenly found themselves surrounded by a live band and full choir, the first bars of "All You Need Is Love" rising up around them. The reaction was the same one we see every time, in every country: stunned silence, then disbelief, then everyone on their feet.
It's a reminder that no matter where in the world we perform it, that moment works the same way. It's not really about the song. It's about surprise, togetherness, and watching a room full of people fall in love with a couple all over again.

What's struck us most, performing this reveal on both sides of the Atlantic, is just how universal it is. Love Actually is one of those rare films that's genuinely beloved across the English-speaking world — the UK, the USA, Ireland, Canada, Australia — and that wedding scene in particular has become a piece of shared cultural memory. Couples in Sarasota know exactly what's happening the second that piano intro starts, in precisely the same way a couple in Yorkshire would. It doesn't need translating or explaining. It's already part of how people in these countries think about weddings, love, and surprise.
That's a rare thing for any piece of entertainment to achieve, and it's exactly why we felt confident bringing the concept across the Atlantic rather than starting from scratch with something new.
